The Underground Room Part I - Fiction

I moved into a Grade II listed building which was split into two apartments, we were on the ground floor and we had signed a 6 month contract with the landlord. Every night I used to hear a whistling sounds, it was faint and sounded like a draft somewhere in the bedroom. I remember I kept checking the windows, but they were well made and there was no draft. We lived there with this whistling sound for about 5 months and we kind of got used to it. It was only when my daughter drew on the wall with her crayon that we ended up finding out what it was. We were made responsible for fixing the damage. We stripped the wall paper and there we saw a rectangle cut out of the wall, a rectangle the size of a narrow door. In the door there was a small hole where the handle used togo, this door led out into the garden, but there was a tree and bushes infront of it now. At least we knew where the sound was coming from. We tried to open the door but it was jammed. It was that night, as I was lying in bed, I saw the little hole in the mysterious door light up. A strong light beamed through into the room like a torch. My husband was asleep and the kids were sleeping too. I looked down and then was a light coming out from under the leaves covering the ground under the tree infront. From what I could see there was a wire mesh covered with leaves and the light was coming from underneath. “Good Grief!” is that some kind of underground room. Is there someone in there using a light. I was full of anxiety.. I ran out of the room straight into the garden and when I looked at the tree then was no light there. I went closer, and closer…it was only when I put my head through the bushes I could see the underground light. I slipped through between the bush and the tree and crept slowly over the leaves. I moved the leaves covering the wire mesh slowly …(Continued in part II)
