Recently i heard on the news that people are going to be allowed to use their mobile aboard planes in European airspace. I think thats crazy, in such a confined environment we are going to have to put up with some plonka nattering on and on during the flight. On aeroplanes people fear heights, have anxieties, or are simply tired or bored. The last thing anyone would want is to hear another person's conversations mid-flight, which would probably end up waking people up, disturbing their open conversations with others and generally making noise pollution. The underground where mobile phones don't work, is the only place here people respect each other's silence. Hundreds of people on one tube and nothing can be heard. Its respectful and considerate. Just imagine the difference if every other person was on the phone chatting away, how irritating would that be.
Some people have suggested its only for quick calls for business men that can't wait. But how can you restrict the length of a conversation. It may begin with just a quick call infrequently made, but this is bound to escalate as people start to consider talking on the mobile in flight as nothing special, a common action. In economy class, the seats are already right next to each other like Sardines in a can and on top of that i'm supposed to be expected to listen to the stranger's conversation next to me as well as smell his ugly breath as he talks away! How inconsiderate. Silence also means you don't smell anyone's bad breath, because all mouths are shut for 90% of the time.
Furthermore, i wonder how the mobile companies will charge for such mid-air calls, who can approach the company and prove that they have been billed wrongly as they were flying over their home country when they made the call so they shouldn't be charged any roaming charges. This whole plan is just another way in which mobile companies can rip off their customers. A European flight lasts only a few hours and its not realistic that people can't wait to just use the phone after the flight.
Perhaps if they are going to do this venture, the airline companies should think of making a place in the plane where people could stand up away from the other passengers and have their conversations without disturbing people around them. I'm furious about this because everyone knows that sitting in one place for hours is difficult anyway despite all the efforts made by the airline to make the journey comfortable.
