We paid this family £1 and they let us stroll through they're house in the City of the Dead... i swear i was shocked, they're living in dark little rooms full of insects, cockroaches and they had two little boys who were playing in a corner...it was a nasty sight, makes you feel incredibly grateful for everything one has...they were living in the lounge and kitchen that was built for the ghosts of the dead in a tomb attached to they're house...it was very freaky! and check this...oh my god, it was soo bad, we went inside the tomb and there was one coffin lying above ground, i said to the man..howa faarig? (is it empty?) and all of a sudden with no warning, he flung the coffin door open and we saw a body inside a bag...and the man said it had been there for 2 months!!!!! SSOOO GROSS...imagine growing up in a place like that...i looked at the faces of the little boys before i left and it was really sad to think that they don't have a choice.
So we carried on walking, and we went inside the mosque of Imam Shafi..he was the leader of one of the four schools of Islamic thought... and his tomb was all decorated with flowers and it was almost like a shrine in the middle of the mosque...So we left there. So we made our way out of the city of the dead and caught a taxi to Citadel...Its this huge, famous fort made by Salah ud-Din, the Muslim leader that fought against the crusaders...he's held in great esteem around the Muslim world. Inside this massive fort, they've built mosques, museums etc...to make it touristy...so we went in at a cheap price ..We visited the mosque of Mohammed Ali, which was full of westerners, the women were made to wear jilbabs before they entered. The decor was amazing and i took a pic of the Mihrab, the niche where the Imam stands, and the ceiling...After that we ended up going into the military museum by accident! They wouldn't let us out until we'd been round the whole museum...we were in there for half and hour, and it was so very very boring. I really had enogh when I finally managed to get out of there. We sighed a relief, even the corridors in that place were stuffy and had been ventilated for ages!!
